Ethnographic study in collaboration with Charité and TU Berlin on alarm management in the intensive care unit

Work in intensive care units is characterized by a high number of sometimes unnecessary alarms. In combination with the high demands of this complex activity, this leads to alarm fatigue among staff and jeopardizes patient safety. In order to develop and implement effective and sustainable solutions for alarm management in intensive care units, an understanding of staff interactions with the patient monitoring system and alarm management practices is essential.

In collaboration with Charité Berlin and the Department of Ergonomics at TU Berlin, this ethnographic study investigated how nurses and doctors interact with patient monitoring systems in intensive care units and interviewed them about their perceptions of alarm management and their ideas regarding intelligent alarm management solutions.
